U-Scan

Project Overview
The U-Scan application was originally designed to provide a solution in order to make the in-store shopping experience painless and to have less contact with the current pandemic situation. It was designed to make shopping less of a hassle and the checkout process convenient and minimal contact with others. The user will be able to scan all their items while they shop and use a self-checkout method. The U-Scan research was created in order to find a deeper understanding of the users needs and frustrations

The Challenge-
Currently shopping has become stressful due to the pandemic and people are in search of a better way to get their groceries without being exposed to others. There is a need to have a product that makes shopping seamless. I researched a way in which there could be a solution to have a safer more convenient shopping experience.
Competitive Analysis
I reviewed Whole Foods and Fred Meyer which are two competitors in the local market in Portland, OR. Using competitive analysis helped to identify areas where their product could be lacking so I can understand where my product would stand out in the industry.
Competitve Analysis
Affinity Diagram
I gathered information from my team members Jane and Luis who provided valuable research through their notes that I combined with my own. When I combined all the user notes I could really start to see trends and repeating data of shopping preferences that was valuable to my research. Affinity Diagramming really helped me name, rank, and understand relationships between groups of information.
User Persona
The user persona was useful to understand pain points such as wanting a more convenient shopping application to shop safer. Knowing the users makes it easier to remember who I was designing for and was able to better understand users and their pain points. Having a user persona for my shopper Heather, allowed me to have an easier time empathizing with people who will use my product. The user personas helped me to keep the users, and their needs, in mind at all times.
Quotes from User Interviews
Shopping while being safe
"I am very concerned about going to the store for groceries in these current times." -Danielle Martinez
Less exposure to people
"I would like to get my groceries with minimal contact to other shoppers and employees." -Tracey Ennis
•Shopping convenience
"I want to shop at my own pace so I can scan my items and checkout on my own." -Derek Mills
Storyboarding
Creating the stories was beneficial because I could put myself in different scenarios and navigate through these ideas.
Paper Prototyping
I prepared the paper screens with UI elements such as icons, buttons, menu and other real features the tester would utilize in the application. The paper prototype allowed quickly visualize and test various ideas and move around screens with the users as I was testing.
User Flow
My user flow takes you from the beginning of signing up for the app and going to the main scan feature. As a user I would be able to create an account, start shopping with the scanner, and checkout by the selected payment method without any contact

Annotated Wireframe
Annotations in the U-Scan design should remove a lot of uncertainty about how experiences work. The user can understand the functionality with the design of the buttons and all the flow of the wireframes. I was able to find some usability issues, as well as successful areas of design that allowed me to make changes for the next round of testing and prototypes.
